Accessibility Policy
Our commitment to making PurplePlug usable for everyone in Potchefstroom, including people using screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, zoom or low-data phones.

1. Our commitment
PurplePlug exists to make student life easier, so it has to work for every student — including students with visual, hearing, motor, cognitive or reading difficulties. Accessibility is part of how we build the app, not an add-on.
2. What we do
- Text and background colours are chosen for strong contrast in the app's dark theme, and information is never carried by colour alone.
- Every screen is usable with a keyboard alone, with visible focus indication and labelled controls.
- Layouts are responsive and tested on small phone screens, and text scales with the phone's own text size settings.
- Buttons, links and form fields carry text labels or accessible names so screen readers announce them properly.
- Forms show clear inline error messages instead of relying on colour or sound.
- Copy is written in plain, short language, and contact details are presented as tappable links so students can reach a reseller or landlord on WhatsApp with one tap.
- Images that carry meaning, such as listing photos, have alternative text; decorative shapes are hidden from assistive technology.
3. The standard we aim at
We aim at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility, and we review new screens against those criteria before they go live. We are working towards full conformance and we are honest about where we are not there yet.
4. Known limitations
- Photos uploaded by students and resellers may arrive without useful descriptions, so a screen reader may only announce the file or listing name.
- Some third-party content, such as map or external service pages opened from a listing, is outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
- Older listings created before an accessibility improvement may still contain unclear wording.
5. Requesting help or reporting a barrier
If any part of PurplePlug is difficult or impossible for you to use, tell us through the app's contact channel. Describe the screen, what you were trying to do and, if you can, the device or assistive technology you use.
We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within two working days and to offer a workable alternative — for example sending you the details of a residence or hustle directly — while the underlying issue is fixed.
6. Continuous improvement
We test new features with keyboard-only navigation, zoomed text and a screen reader before release, and we keep a list of accessibility issues to work through. This policy is reviewed at least once a year, and whenever a significant part of the app is redesigned.
